Frontera norte Journal Guidelines for Authors

Frontera norte is a bilingual journal, published twice a year by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte with the objective of disseminating research on topics relating to Mexico’s border regions or on international border issues.

Frontera norte will receive articles, book reviews and critical notes written in Spanish or English. Authors submitting manuscripts for possible publication in this journal must warrant their works are unpublished and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere.

The articles received will be submitted to a double-blind review (in which the author(s)’ name will be omitted); critical notes and book reviews will be selected by the Director and Editorial Committee of the journal, on the basis of the originality on its analysis, its quality, actuality and thematic relevance. All manuscripts should observe the following guidelines:

i. Manuscripts should be sent by e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or the printed version with its electronic file backup to the address shown at the end of this section.

ii. The author’s data, i.e. full name, and affiliations - department, university or organization, city, state/province (if applicable), and country - academic qualifications, address, e-mail and phone number should be listed at the end of the article, for all authors. If the article has been submitted on behalf of a consortium, one of the authors should be designated as the corresponding author. All the authors and their referential data must be included.

iii. Articles must have a minimum of 25 and a maximum length of 35 pages (12- points, Times, double spaced, A4 or letter-sized sheets, with 3cm margins— 1.2 inches), including abstract, footnotes, figures, tables, and the reference list, preferably in Microsoft Word format.

iv. The title page must include an abstract of the article in Spanish and English, of at most 100 words each, in addition to 5 key words. Then include the text, references and appendices.

v. The footnotes must not include bibliographical references, but only additional comments to the text.

vi. Separate files including graphs in JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif) format at 300 dpi of resolution, grayscale (B/W) and one file per item must be provided.

vii. The figures and tables should only include precise statistical information, on a spreadsheet format, preferably Microsoft Excel.

viii. Each file should be named by type of item, consecutive number and the page on which it is located (graf02p13.jpg, map11p27.tif; fig08p32.jpg; tabla06p02.xls; etc.). It is very important to indicate exactly the place where each item is to be located between paragraphs, as well as its detailed source. Since the journal is published in black and white, color illustrations and graphs won’t be accepted.

ix. Reference notes should be submitted in the Harvard format, i.e. with the author(s)’ surname, year of publication, and where appropriate, the page(s) referred to: (Surname, year: page(s)).

x. Bibliographical, newspaper, journal, Internet references, etc. must be listed at the end of the manuscript, in alphabetical order and grouped by type, as in the following examples:

1) Books Peñaloza, Javier (edit.), Las nubes del desierto, Coahuila, México, Universidad de Coahuila-FCE, 2003a, (Col. Los desérticos, No. 12). Peñaloza, Javier, Jordán Wolkov and Jeremy Christensen, Los espacios inseguros en la frontera México-Estados Unidos, 17th ed., Texas, United States, Random House, 2003b.

2) Periodical Publications and Other documents (Proceedings, Conferences, Papers, etc.) Wong-González, Pablo, “Globalización y regionalización: Nuevas estrategias de desarrollo regional transfronterizo” in Planeamiento del desarrollo regional en el siglo XXI: América Latina y el Caribe, Nagoya, Japón, United Nations Center for Development (UNCTAD), 1998, pp. 41- 64 (unrdd Proceedings Series, 33).

3) Electronic Sources Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Tijuana. 2006. Tarifas, http://www.cespt.gob.mx/cespt/drvisapi.dll?MIval=/v2002/varios/tarifas.ht ml (March 21 2006).

xi. Critical notes are intended to create a forum for debate. They ought to have ten pages maximum, including references (as specified above). Graphs should not be included in this type of text.

xii. Book reviews should be critical appraisals of recent publications, linked to any of Frontera norte’s relevant topics. They should indicate the contributions and limitations of the book reviewed, as well as its links with previously published literature on the subject and to have a maximum length of five pages (idem supra). For this type of manuscript, giving the basic references of the publication reviewed is sufficient.

Texts published in Frontera Norte may be disseminated by their authors in other media, providing that credit is given and the following phrase included: “This article was originally published in Frontera Norte, edited by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte” (including the complete reference: volume, issue, year of publication and pages).
